The Ascendant: First House.

Ascend means to rise. This is why we also refer to the first house as our "Rising Sign" in astrology. 

Our ascendant refers to the Zodiac sign that was ascending on the Eastern horizon at the specific time and location of our birth it plays a critical role in shaping one's outward personality appearance and how they interact with the world. 

The significance of our ascendant should never be overlooked since it is the first impression we give other who do not really know us. Professional and amateur astrologers often refer to our rising sign as "the mask"; sun represents our ego; and the moon represents our emotions. 

Another word for Mask is a disguise or a veil or façade. This is an inaccurate depiction of our ascendant because we cannot hide behind ourself. Our rising sign can be viewed more like our representative. The part we feel safe allowing others to see. Childhood between ages birth to seven years being the most profound in shaping our sense of self. This period of our lives forms our sense of identity, personality, & behavior in later life. 

 Every aspect of our chart matters because each of the 12 houses, symbolizes a different area of our lives from family, friends, lovers, career, etc.... without understanding our rising sign the rest of our chart would render ineffective.
